THE "DISCOVERING EUROPE" PROJECT TAKES CHILDREN TO THE HEART OF EUROPE

Sixth edition of the innovative project funded by the Union of Municipalities of Gerrei dedicated to students of the area.

In the heart of Brussels , Sardinian students had an unforgettable educational experience thanks to the project "Discovering Europe", funded by the Union of Municipalities of Gerrei and now in its sixth edition. The project involved third-year middle school students from Sant'Andrea Frius, Escalaplano, San Nicolò Gerrei, San Basilio, Silius , Ballao, Villasalto, Goni and Armungia . The aim of " Discovering Europe " is to strengthen young people's understanding of the functioning, history, values and role of the European Union . This initiative, now in its sixth edition, led third-year middle school students from various municipalities in Sardinia to explore the European institutions and the continent's rich history up close.

The trip, which began on March 3, 2024, offered students five days of educational and cultural activities in Brussels. On the first day, after their arrival and settling in, students explored the center of Brussels, visiting iconic sites such as the Grand Place and the Manneken Pis statue.

In the following days, the group deepened their understanding of European dynamics with visits to the European Parliament , where they experienced an interactive tour, and to the Parlamentarium , the largest parliamentary visitor centre in Europe. These experiences allowed the students to immerse themselves in the political structure and decision-making processes of the EU.

Another highlight of the trip was a visit to the Atomium and the House of European History , where the young people were able to reflect on the continent’s tumultuous past and its future aspirations. They also explored the city of Antwerp , discovering its rich history and culture.

The trip concluded with a free day to explore more of Brussels before returning home. This educational experience not only broadened the students’ knowledge of Europe, but also strengthened their sense of belonging to a larger, interconnected community.

This project demonstrates the commitment of the Union of Municipalities of Gerrei in promoting a deeper understanding of the European Union among young people, preparing them to become informed and proactive citizens in the European and global context.
